just over a year since the iPhone was released, and Apple is upping the ante in the smart phone wars.

We’re talking about the release of the new 3G version of the iPhone.

Our latest survey of 3,567 consumers – conducted in the aftermath of Apple’s June 9th announcement on the release of its 3G model – shows the next generation iPhone having a tsunami-like impact on the smart phone market.

At present, the Canadian Blackberry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIMM; 42%, unchanged) is the clear consumer smart phone market leader among smart phone owners.

But the biggest mover here is the Apple iPhone (11%; up 2-pts) – which continues to make major inroads in the consumer marketplace. Having gained market share for the fourth-consecutive survey, it is now close to wrestling the number two spot away from Palm (PALM; 14%, down 2-pts).

“These numbers are good news for Apple,” said analyst Tobin Smith, “but it’s when we asked respondents about their planned smart phone purchases over the next 90 days that the tsunami-like effect of this marketplace transformation becomes crystal clear.”

The Coming Apple Tsunami

When we asked respondents about their planned smart phone purchases over the next 90 days the full extent of the marketplace transformation becomes apparent. An astonishing 56% of respondents who plan to purchase a smart phone in the next 90 days say they’re getting an Apple iPhone – a huge 21-pt leap from the previous survey.

The chart below shows just how dramatic a jump in market share this represents.

Going forward, RIM’s share of consumer planned purchases is set to take a hit over the next 90 days, falling 6-pts to 23%. Palm remains a far distant third with just 3% of planned purchases.

Note that the above chart focuses exclusively on the 10.5% of total survey respondents who say they plan on buying a smart phone during the next 90 days. The 10.5% represents a sharp jump from our previous survey in March, and it is the highest percentage of planned smart phone buyers we’ve recorded in a survey (see chart below).

“The most likely explanation for such a large-scale projected increase in smart phone buyers going forward is the anticipation and publicity surrounding the imminent release of the 3G iPhone,” said Smith.

Another reason for Apple’s continued popularity is its incredible customer satisfaction rating. An extraordinary four-in-five iPhone owners (78%) report they’re Very Satisfied with their iPhone. RIM ranks second, with a highly respectable 54% of its customers saying they’re Very Satisfied. Palm (29%), while up a few points since our previous survey, still ranks near the bottom in terms of customer satisfaction.

In another positive for the new 3G iPhone, better than one-in-two current iPhone owners (55%) say they’re Very Likely to buy the 3G iPhone for themselves or someone else in the future. And many don’t plan to wait long. Among this group, half (50%) say they’ll purchase within the first 90 days of release.

RIM Gets Set to Counterattack

While the 3G iPhone announcement has catapulted Apple into the lead over RIM in terms of planned consumer smart phone purchases, it should be remembered that RIM has a huge lead of its own in the corporate smart phone market. RIM is also still the leader among current owners in the consumer market.

Moreover, RIM isn’t sitting idly by while Apple roles out the 3G iPhone. The Canadian manufacturer has multiple plans in motion to counter Apple’s momentum among consumers – including an already announced new product release (the Bold) and two likely additional product releases (the Thunder and Kickstart).

In an upcoming article, we will report on what consumer respondents have to say about RIM’s new counteroffensive – and the ongoing battle for smart phone supremacy.

Ferdie Frederic asked:

Ask anyone who is anybody and they will tell you at least a 1000 words on the iPhone. In case you was stuck in a cave, the iPhone is the multimedia company Apple Inc. breath taking trendy phone that has sent a blazing fire through the consumer world. Packed with a multitude of features and not too mention a sleek design many credit card packing soldiers have cemented their loyalty to these phones and any future updates.

The iPhone was released on June 29, 2007 to a multitude of consumers in the US and other five countries including Ireland, UK, France, Germany, and Australia. Eventually it sold approximately several hundred thousand phones the weekend it launched and set the precedent for future launch dates of their follow up versions.

With Apple Inc., Steve Jobs wanted to take a new and bold approach into the world of touchscreen devices, and with that the concept of the iPhone was born. With a development cost well into the 100′s of millions of dollars the development of the iPhone was kept under wrap and went through many revisions before being released on the day of June 29th, 2007.

Eventually, Apple Inc. would release another version of the iPhone. Dubbed the iPhone 3G, on July 11th, 2008 Apple released it in 70+ countries. Apple went on to sale approximately 1 million phones within its first three days, and lack of service resulted many times when their iTunes servers were unresponsive due to overloading.

Multimedia Features

The sticking point with many consumers is the various amount of features on the iPhone. Such features include audio conferencing, call holding, caller ID, voice dialing, video calling, mp3 integration, text messaging, internet access, email, and etc.

Email

In relationship to the Blackberry phone, the iPone also allows the user to access his or her email through various programs such as Yahoo!, Googles Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, Kerio MailServer, Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Entourage. Using HTML based settings, one can view photos not to mention PDF, Word, and Excel attachements also on the phone.

Internet

Internet access is available on the iPhone but it also depends on if the phone is in a Wi-Fi or internet network area. The iPhone accesses the World Wide Web through a modification of the Safari web browser. The iPhone’s internet capabilities gives the user the ability to view certain webpages either in portrait of landscape mode and also supports zooming.

The technological feat of the iPhone is its ability to utilize the Google’s map service which can provide directions between two different user defined locations and also real time road traffic information. In addition to, even though the phone iteself does not utilize Flash, nor Java technology, Apple has developed an application in which the user can easily access YouTube and view videos on the iPhone.

Music

The iPhone is unique for the fact that it can operate similarly just like Apple’s other juggernaut electronic device, the iPod. Giving you the ability to import mp3′s, the iPhone allows you to sort your music library by several categories with songs, artists, albums and videos just being some categories to name.

The iPhone allows you direct access to the iTune stores giving you the ability to purchase and download songs over Wi-Fi. Going along with the touchscreen philosophy, just like in the iPod the iPhone can also utilize all these features width the swiping of the finger along the with of the screen.

Here a couple of statistics released by the Nielsen Company, Nielson Mobile, on the iPhone.

How many of these phones are already out there?

- Nielsen Mobile estimates there are 2.3 million US mobile subscribers using an iPhone.

- The iPhone accounts for 1 percent of all embedded mobile phone users in the US.

Who is using the iPhone?

- 67 percent of US iPhone users are male.

- 82 percent access the Internet over their phone (making them five times as likely to access the Internet as the average mobile consumer).

At a price?

- 36 percent of iPhone users have a monthly bill of over US$100 (compared to 20 percent of all mobile subscribers).

Business or pleasure?

- 15 percent say their company foots the bill.

- 24 percent say they use their phone for business but pay the bill themselves.

- 61 percent say they are a personal user.

It is easy to see the dominance that the iPhone holds over the multimedia market. Despite its heavy price tag, you can just imagine years down the line the effect Apple will have over the mobile phone industry. Even before the release of the iPhone 3G, many companies released iPhone look-a-likes in order to compete with Apple Inc. and provide a cheaper alternative. Even though, with over a 2 million subscribers, I think consumers have made their mind as far as where there allegiance lies.

Matt Sharp asked:

It’s been causing a stir before it even got released, but soon, you’ll be able to get your hands on one of the most eagerly awaited mobile phones ever: the stunning, powerful and achingly cool Blackberry Storm 9500…

Fruit-based communications – the history of Blackberry mobile phones

When you look round the world of mobile phones, most phones seem to have one thing, one key point that sticks in your mind. The Apple iPhone’s known for its flashy interface. Sony Ericsson are known for Cyber-Shot and Walkman mobile phones… and Blackberry mobile phones are known for email. It won’t surprise you to learn that the first Blackberry mobile phones (well, let’s call them ‘devices’, for now) were focused heavily on instant email, wherever you were. That was their party trick, and it was so powerful a tool that Blackberry mobile phones became the standard for business phones. Rarely would you see a businessman using anything but a Blackberry mobile phone! But then, something happened, and they went all commercial. They weren’t content with being just business mobile phones any more, Blackberry devices wanted to finally live up to the name ‘mobile phone’ and crack the non-corporate sector, too. Their first assaults, the Blackberry Pearl, and Blackberry Curve, are still going strong today, and loads of people have joined the Cult Of Blackberry (and even more will do because of the Blackberry Bold).

But there’s one mobile phone that’s destined to be the star of the show for Blackberry this year, and with very good reason. It’s their first ever touchscreen mobile phone, it’s got innovation pouring out of every orifice, and it’s one of the sexiest and most powerful mobile phones of the year.

Yep, it can only be the Blackberry Storm 9500…

Blackberry Storm 9500 – more than just a storm in a teacup…

The Blackberry Storm 9500 is a first in more ways than one. Not only is it the first touchscreen mobile phone ever made by them, but the Blackberry Storm 9500 is the first phone ever to have a clickable, moving screen. I’ll say that again. The screen on the Blackberry Storm 9500 moves. And why is that? Well, because it makes the action of selecting something on screen, pressing down on it, feel like you’re pressing a physical button, giving you FAR more tactile feedback than any other mobile phones can manage. So good is this concept, that when using the virtual keyboard on the Blackberry Storm 9500 feels almost identical to using a real, physical keyboard! No other mobile phones in the world can claim that.

In terms of features, you a 3 megapixel camera (which isn’t as good as some other mobile phones on the market, but does still produce some really nice photos), HSDPA internet access and GPS, as well as a brilliant music and video player. Oh, and incidentally, given that the screen is also huge, videos played on the Blackberry Storm 9500 look fantastic.

Come on, how good is the Blackberry Storm 9500, really?

Ok, so it’s full of cool features, it’s got a unique clicky screen, but when you get right down to it, is the Blackberry Storm 9500 (or just the Blackberry Storm, if you can’t be bothered to keep using its full name) really that good? Well, yes, it is, quite frankly. Sure, you can list the features till the cows come home, but the true mark of quality in mobile phones is how a particular device makes you feel, and, well, the Blackberry Storm 9500 will make you feel brilliant. From clicking down on that screen (which just rocks), to watching videos, to the full Blackberry email service (which, yes, you do get), the Blackberry Storm 9500 is just phenomenal. So, to the answer the question… is the Blackberry Storm 9500 any good? No. It’s even better!
